Appendix - Microsoft ClearType
Microsoft ClearType is Window's built-in typeface anti-aliasing. Basically, it smooths out jagged-looking lines into approximate curves, making type far easier to read. It is turned on by default in Microsoft Windows Vista and 7, and a similar technology is used on MacOS.
To turn it on (Windows XP), navigate to Start Menu > Control Panel > Display > Appearance > Effects >, and tick 'Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts:', then select 'ClearType'. To fine-tune ClearType, you may wish try Microsoft's online ClearType Tuner or download ClearType Tuner PowerToy for WindowsXP.
