Lyrics

Now December's the month that the fire season starts,
And some people get tense in the Hills and such parts.
There'll be scrub fires and grass fires, smoke sightings galore-
Do we ask what the hell do we do it all for?

Even winter is busy, we're often flat out,
There's a need for our service, of that there's no doubt.
It's a road crash, domestic, gas leak or dead cat,
Or a fixed alarm, fals alarm - plenty of that.

There's a glamorous side that just has to be told,
Of standing and waiting at night in the cold.
But you'll get pretty hod dragging hoses up slopes,
There are hillsides up here where the goats all use ropes.

You may ask: "What the hell do we do it all for?"
It's called helping your neighbour, although it's much more
It's the journey, the friendship that walks through the door.
You may ask what the hell do we do it all for.

As a volunteer service we're proud of our skills,
Serving thousands of homes in the country and Hills,
But some members move on and we need a few more.
Will they ask: "What the hell do you do it all for?"

When a stump snags the hose and your water's cut off,
You can't see for the smoke and you're starting to cough,
It may seem like a taste of what life's like in hell.
Just thank God for the bombers, and tankers, as well.

Oh your safety comes first, you're no good if you're dead,
So we don't want the gung-ho's, we're looking instead,
For some people of all sorts who'll learn what to do.
And we do recruit women, good firefighters too.

You may ask: "What the hell do we do it all for?"
It's called helping your neighbour, although it's much more
It's the journey, the friendship that walks through the door.
You may ask what the hell do we do it all for.

Oh it's easy for us when the pager goes bleep,
To drop everything quick or leap straight from our sleep.
But our partners and kids are just left at the door,
Do the ask themselves what they put up with it for?

You may ask: "What the hell do we do it all for?"
But we know why we do it and why we'll do more-
It's the smiles of relief from the people in strife,
And the knowledge we've saved someone's house or their life.

You may ask: "What the hell do we do it all for?"
It's called helping your neighbour, although it's much more
It's the journey, the friendship that walks through the door.
You may ask what the hell do we do it all for.
